Engineering Surveyors, Melbourne

August 12, 2020

The team at Swanson Surveying have recently undertaken an as-constructed survey along an Australian Rail Track Corporation 150m long elevated railway bridge in Sunshine, Melbourne. This work was undertaken in the vicinity of the ARTC, Metro and Vline networks – our team already held all of the required certifications to work on these networks, enabling us to mobilise for the project quickly.

The survey was undertaken to accurately determine the location of 200 newly installed brackets along the concrete plinths of the elevated railway bridge. These brackets will enable new safety rails to be fabricated offsite and installed on the railway bridge with minimum amounts of disruptions to the rail network.

Our team were working on the rail bridge while trains were using the lines, and due to limited space on the bridge, each time train was coming through, our team had to vacate the bridge completely. A high accuracy control network was established to ensure that each time the survey equipment was packed up for the train occupation, we could resume our work efficiently. A 3D CAD file of the as-constructed survey was provided to the client so that fabrication works could be designed and constructed offsite, minimising installation time.
