UAV Survey – Bellarine Railway Rehabilitation, Drysdale to Queenscliff

Another example of the benefits of utilising UAV survey technology for precise aerial mapping is the feature and level survey of the Bellarine Rail corridor that we completed for one of our clients recently.

The project brief was to survey the Bellarine Railway line from Drysdale Station to Queenscliff Station to support operations and expansion of Bellarine Railway services. These services include the iconic Q-Train and Blues Train rail experiences which are an important regional community tourism asset. The survey would assist in facilitating the improvement and rehabilitation of the 16.5km rail track infrastructure between Drysdale (High St) and Queenscliff (Bridge St); inclusive of yards and sidings.

Given the large extents and logistical challenges of the survey, Swanson Surveying utilised our RTK UAV to capture the data acquisition and combined this with traditional survey techniques and laser scanning in areas the UAV was unable to acquire the required information.

The project deliverable was a full features and level survey plan of the rail corridor including a long section of the rail centre line.

The UAV acquisition comprised of:

  • 14 flights
  • 6 hours of flight time
  • 4,833 images captured
