Marine Piling & Engineering Surveying – Spirit of Tasmania Port, East Devonport

Swanson Surveying is proud to be contributing to the major redevelopment of Berth 3 at the Port of Devonport, a transformative project designed to accommodate the new generation Spirit of Tasmania vessels.

The redevelopment centres around the construction of “Spirit Quay”, a modern terminal and marine infrastructure upgrade that will support the arrival of Spirit of Tasmania IV and V. As part of the marine works package, Swanson Surveying has been involved in critical surveying support for the installation of large-diameter marine piles forming the foundation of the new berthing infrastructure.

The project includes the installation of 1600mm diameter pile casings measuring up to 41.9 metres in length, drilled to depths of RL -33 metres below the riverbed. These substantial marine piling works are essential to supporting the upgraded berth structure and ensuring the terminal can safely accommodate the larger ferries.

Swanson Surveying’s expertise in engineering surveying has played an important role in ensuring accuracy and efficiency throughout the marine construction process, supporting both positioning and alignment requirements for the complex piling operations.

The wider redevelopment includes a new $16 million passenger terminal featuring a contemporary maritime-inspired design, expanded vehicle queuing capacity, and upgraded facilities to improve the passenger experience. Major dredging works, a heavy-duty loading ramp, and infrastructure to support a 700-tonne boarding gantry have also been completed as part of the project.

Swanson Surveying continues to deliver crucial surveying support on major maritime infrastructure projects, having previously contributed to the upgrade of the Spirit of Tasmania Quay in Geelong. The Devonport redevelopment highlights the company’s ongoing involvement in complex marine construction projects that support the next generation of passenger and freight infrastructure.
